Hackers stole $8 million from crypto exchange Coinsbuy in a coordinated attack spanning Ethereum and TRON blockchains on August 9, according to reporting on the incident. The theft targeted eight wallets on TRON and three on Ethereum tied to the exchange's infrastructure.

Coinsbuy covered all losses from its own reserves, meaning user deposits were not affected by the breach. The attackers had access to private keys or signing mechanisms across multiple platforms. This level of technical access typically requires either a compromised server, insider access, or a vulnerability in the exchange's key management system.

The attack adds Coinsbuy to a growing list of platforms that have suffered significant losses this year despite increasing investment in security infrastructure. In 2024 and 2025, major exchanges including Kraken, OKX, and Binance each disclosed breaches or theft incidents totaling hundreds of millions in aggregate, though most were contained through insurance or reserve coverage rather than user loss.

Coinsbuy is a relatively smaller regional exchange with a presence in South Asia and parts of Southeast Asia. The exchange has not publicly disclosed the full technical details of how the breach occurred or whether law enforcement agencies have been engaged in the investigation.

The attackers either maintained access to Coinsbuy's infrastructure for an extended period or had a single point of compromise that granted visibility into both chains. Ethereum and TRON operate on separate consensus mechanisms and validator networks. The exchange's internal systems, rather than the blockchains themselves, were the likely target.

The specific wallet addresses involved allow on-chain analysts to track whether the stolen funds are being consolidated, moved through mixers, or converted to other assets.

Exchanges that cover losses from reserves deplete capital that could otherwise fund product development or geographic expansion. If Coinsbuy does not recover the stolen funds through blockchain tracing or law enforcement cooperation, the $8 million charge represents a material hit to a mid-sized operator's balance sheet.
