Augustus has closed a $180 million Series B funding round at a $1 billion valuation, according to an announcement on July 21. The round funds expansion of the clearing bank into dollar settlement and new geographies beyond its existing euro operations.

Augustus operates as a licensed clearing bank, a settlement layer that sits between cryptocurrency and traditional finance infrastructure. The company processes transactions for fintechs and banks that need direct access to central bank money without building their own clearing relationships. Clearing banks have historically been gatekept by major financial institutions; Augustus is one of a small number of crypto-native operators licensed to settle in fiat currencies across jurisdictions.

The Series B comes as demand for stablecoin and AI agent payment infrastructure accelerates. Circle published a report this month titled "Beyond Agentic Payments: The Operating Layer for the Agentic Economy." Morpho launched a fixed-rate lending protocol on Base the same week. Ondo Finance enabled tokenized stock collateral on its perpetual futures platform. Jito, the Solana MEV infrastructure company, opened JTX Trade, a self-custody exchange.

Augustus already holds a euro clearing license and processes settlement for institutional clients across Europe. The new capital accelerates buildout of dollar clearing capability, which requires separate regulatory approval in the United States and integration with Fedwire, the Federal Reserve's real-time gross settlement system. Dollar clearing access removes a critical bottleneck for international fintechs that cannot open traditional correspondent banking relationships.

Sequoia, Tiger Global, and others participated in the round according to the announcement. Augustus competes with traditional correspondent banks and newer entrants like Silvergate, which shut down in 2023 after deposit losses, and Signature, acquired by New York Community Bank in 2023. Unlike those predecessors, Augustus is structured as a clearing bank rather than a commercial deposit-taking bank, a distinction that isolates it from some deposit-related risks.

The funding also arrives as Korean policymakers push to enact a General Act on Digital Assets this year, a legislative effort that would establish domestic stablecoin and crypto payment frameworks. The global regulatory environment around stablecoins and payment tokens continues to harden; the EU's Markets in Crypto Regulation took effect last month. Augustus' expansion into dollar clearing positions the company as a primary infrastructure layer for international stablecoin settlement as regulatory frameworks mature.

Augustus raised at a ten-fold valuation increase from prior rounds and now holds one of the few crypto-native clearing licenses at scale. The company must obtain Federal Reserve approval for dollar clearing before the new capital can deploy into that product. If Augustus receives dollar clearing approval by the end of 2026, it would become the first crypto-native clearing bank with both EUR and USD settlement capability.
