Tesla is preparing a public launch of the Cybercab in Austin, Texas, as soon as the end of August, beginning with employee test rides, according to reporting on the company's plans.

The two-seater vehicle has no steering wheel or pedals and is central to Elon Musk's autonomous vehicle strategy. Tesla employees have been testing a fully driverless version on private roads while continuing to gather data. In some deployments around the country, test units have retained manual controls as the company collects information from real-world driving.

Tesla has been developing the Cybercab for years as part of its broader effort to deploy autonomous vehicles at scale. The company's Full Self-Driving software, which powers the vehicle, operates under conditional approval in certain U.S. states and has faced ongoing scrutiny from regulators. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been monitoring Tesla's autonomous capabilities, though no formal restrictions have been imposed on the Cybercab specifically.

Austin, home to Tesla's Giga Texas manufacturing facility, is one of the company's primary testing grounds for autonomous technology. The city has become a hub for robotaxi trials, with other companies including Waymo operating similar services in the area.
