Kraken has become the first crypto-native platform in Europe to offer both traditional U.S. equities and tokenized versions of those assets within a single regulated account, according to an announcement on its blog on August 18.

The exchange operates under a Markets in Financial Instruments Directive license issued to Payward Europe Digital Solutions in Cyprus, which permits it to offer securities trading across the European Economic Area. Kraken's move collapses a structural boundary that has separated traditional finance and crypto platforms in Europe: a customer can now buy Apple stock, Nvidia stock, or a tokenized representation of either, called xStocks, through the same account without switching venues or custody structures.

Tokenized versions of U.S.-listed equities have existed in Europe for months, offered by specialized platforms and decentralized protocols. Kraken's innovation is regulatory scope. The exchange holds a single MiFID II authorization that covers both cash equities and the tokenized versions, eliminating the licensing fragmentation that forced European investors to choose between traditional brokers for stocks or crypto platforms for tokens. Kraken's xStocks are issued by Onchain Custodian, a third-party tokenization provider, and settle on a blockchain rather than through traditional clearinghouse infrastructure.

The offering targets a specific regulatory structure in Europe. The EU's Markets in Crypto Regulation framework, which began applying in December 2024, created new pathways for crypto platforms to offer regulated financial products. Kraken uses its existing MiFID II license and the ERC-20 standards for tokenization to avoid the fragmentation that exists in the U.S., where crypto platforms cannot offer traditional securities and stock brokers cannot offer cryptocurrencies without separate licenses.

Kraken's entry into equities trading follows a broader tightening of its European operations. The platform delisted margin trading in May 2024 and shifted its U.S. business model after settling enforcement cases with the SEC and CFTC. The equities offering represents an expansion of its core business in a jurisdiction where regulatory approval for crypto-native platforms has become achievable, whereas compliance costs in the U.S. remain prohibitive for new product categories.

The number of tokenized equity users in Europe remains small relative to traditional brokerage adoption. However, institutional interest in tokenized assets has accelerated since MiCA passed in March 2023, with custody providers, issuers, and settlement networks investing heavily in infrastructure. Kraken's single-platform model removes a technical and operational friction point that has slowed retail adoption of tokenized versions of traditional assets.

Kraken does not disclose the number of European customers eligible for equities trading or any pricing details for xStocks relative to traditional shares. The document to watch is whether the exchange publishes user numbers or asset volumes for its equities product after 90 days of operation.
