S&P Global Ratings has launched a new risk assessment framework for onchain lending vaults as deposits in the sector reached $10 billion, up from $1.5 billion two years ago, according to an announcement on October 4.
The framework assesses seven categories of risk: credit, liquidity, curator, blockchain, protocol, security, and governance. S&P Global said initial vault assessments will follow the launch. The company did not specify a timeline for those first ratings or name which vaults would be evaluated first.
Onchain lending vaults pool capital from depositors and deploy it across decentralized finance protocols, typically lending to borrowers against collateral. The sector has grown rapidly as institutions and retail holders have sought yield on idle crypto holdings. Major platforms in the space include Yearn Finance, Lido, and Aave, which collectively hold billions in user deposits.
S&P Global's entry into vault rating marks an attempt to apply traditional credit rating discipline to decentralized finance products. The company already rates corporate bonds, municipal debt, and structured finance instruments; vault ratings would extend that model to on-chain assets. The framework's inclusion of curator risk and blockchain risk depends on smart contract code and the underlying blockchain's security.

Vault deposits grew 567 percent over two years, to $10 billion. S&P Global's framework launch came as regulators globally have tightened scrutiny of unrated crypto products and as investors have sought third-party verification of risk in protocols following high-profile failures like FTX and LUNA.
No other major ratings firm has yet launched a comparable framework for onchain vaults. Moody's and Fitch, S&P's traditional competitors in credit rating, have released cryptocurrency research and guidance but have not announced dedicated vault assessment products.
A positive S&P rating could open institutional investment in vaults if the firm's ratings prove credible and widely adopted. Pension funds and endowments use credit ratings to assess allocation decisions. The speed at which vault operators and platforms adopt the framework will determine whether it becomes a market standard or remains a niche offering.
The key measure of the framework's impact will be whether S&P Global publishes ratings on vaults representing a material portion of the $10 billion in sector deposits within twelve months of launch.
