Ripple locked 700 million XRP into escrow on September 1 following its monthly token release, according to blockchain tracking data. The two transfers, valued at $952 million, comprised 500 million and 200 million XRP in separate transactions.
Ripple's escrow mechanism has anchored the company's token supply strategy since 2017. Each month, the company releases 1 billion XRP from escrow, then returns a portion to newly created escrow contracts. The structure caps the total XRP supply at 100 billion and constrains how much Ripple can sell or deploy in any given period.
The September release distributed 1 billion XRP across three transactions. After locking 700 million back into escrow, 300 million XRP remains outside escrow contracts, available for Ripple to spend on development, sales, or other uses. The company does not publicly disclose how it allocates XRP held outside escrow.
Ripple's escrow currently holds approximately 31.28 billion XRP, according to public holdings data. The escrow balance has declined from the 55 billion XRP locked when the program began in 2017, reflecting cumulative monthly releases and Ripple's decision not to return every released token to new contracts.

The locked XRP carries no trading restrictions. Escrow contracts function as programmatic commitments rather than legal holds. XRP trades on hundreds of exchanges and is held by millions of addresses worldwide. Ripple's monthly escrow cycles have proceeded consistently for nearly a decade regardless of XRP's price or market conditions.
Escrow releases have not changed the timing or scale of Ripple's token operations despite regulatory pressure from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which claimed in 2020 that XRP sales constituted unregistered securities offerings. A federal judge ruled in July 2023 that XRP itself is not a security, though secondary sales by Ripple employees may carry separate restrictions. The case settled in July 2024.
Ripple's September escrow relock was its routine monthly action. The metric that tracks supply discipline is the ratio of XRP returned to escrow versus XRP released: in this case, 700 million of 1 billion, or 70 percent. If Ripple maintains this ratio through 2027, the escrow balance would stabilize above 28 billion XRP. The company has not announced whether it plans to change the return percentage or halt releases at any threshold.
