Public Citizen, a U.S. consumer advocacy group, said in an August 27 report that crypto ventures linked to Donald Trump and his family have caused investors at least $4.7 billion in losses since 2022, mostly unrealized.
The report examined five crypto products: NFT trading cards, WLFI, the TRUMP token, USD1, and Trump Media's cryptocurrency treasury strategy. Public Citizen sourced price data from blockchain analytics firms and exchange records to estimate investor losses across these ventures. The methodology tracked the difference between acquisition prices paid by retail buyers and current market values.
The TRUMP token accounted for $3.2 billion in estimated losses, the largest share by far. According to blockchain data cited in the report, approximately 1 million of the 1.6 million Solana wallets that purchased TRUMP are currently in unrealized loss. Public Citizen estimated at least $1 billion in losses from WLFI and about $450 million in unrealized losses linked to Trump Media's Bitcoin holdings.
Trump reported at least $1.4 billion in income derived from related crypto businesses in his 2025 financial disclosure filed with federal authorities. Investors at those same ventures lost $4.7 billion by the same accounting period.

The report documents a broader pattern of retail participation in Trump-branded digital assets during a period of heightened political alignment between cryptocurrency advocates and the Trump campaign. The TRUMP token launched in January 2025 and became one of the fastest-adopted meme tokens on Solana by trading volume, though its price has declined substantially from launch levels.
Public Citizen's analysis is limited to documented purchases traceable through on-chain data and exchange records; actual total losses may exceed the reported figure if additional wallets or off-exchange holdings are included. The report does not assess whether Trump-linked entities face legal liability for the losses, though it notes the scale of retail exposure to these products.
Founders and insiders in crypto ventures typically retain early allocations at low cost while retail buyers enter at market prices. Public Citizen called for regulatory scrutiny of celebrity-endorsed crypto products and disclosure requirements that would clarify founder holdings and lock-up periods before retail distribution.
