Cardano and Injective have activated direct cross-chain communication over IBC on testnet, enabling native asset transfers between the two blockchains without intermediary bridges. The integration allows cardano-native and injective-protocol-native tokens to move directly between ecosystems, and developers can exchange messages between decentralized applications running on each network.
IBC, the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol, is a standardized layer 0 messaging framework that allows independent blockchains to verify and relay data to one another. Cardano's integration with Injective through IBC represents a technical shift away from wrapped or third-party bridge models, where tokens are locked on one chain and minted as representations on another. Native rails eliminate that intermediary step.
Injective, a blockchain designed for decentralized derivatives trading and built on Cosmos, called the connection the first live on-chain rail linking its network with Cardano. Cardano, the proof-of-stake chain developed by Input Output Global and the Cardano Foundation, has historically operated outside the Cosmos ecosystem; this integration marks its first direct IBC connection to a major blockchain network. The testnet launch was announced by the Cardano Foundation on August 3, 2026.

Both teams plan to move the integration to mainnet in the future, though neither has set a specific date. The activation follows Cardano's work to expand interoperability; the chain has been exploring cross-chain messaging for over two years. For Injective, the connection adds liquidity pathways to one of the ten largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization.
IBC connections require both chains to implement the protocol layer and validate each other's consensus. Cardano had to adapt its settlement layer to support IBC's verification requirements, a significant engineering effort. Injective, already a Cosmos chain with native IBC support, required less modification. The testnet phase typically lasts weeks or months, during which developers test token transfers and message passing before mainnet readiness. Withdrawals and deposits across the bridge will run through a validator set once mainnet launches, with each chain maintaining sovereignty over its portion of the connection.
