BlackRock's BUIDL fund reclaimed the top position in the tokenized US Treasury market this week, holding $2.8 billion in assets and commanding 18.5% of a $15.1 billion total market, according to Token Terminal data.

The shift marks a reversal after Circle's USYC briefly overtook BUIDL in late August. USYC had grown from roughly $600 million to nearly $3 billion, reaching a peak of around $2.9 billion before BUIDL regained its lead.

Tokenized Treasury funds allow institutional investors to hold US government debt on public blockchains, settling transactions without traditional custodians or clearinghouses. The products emerged in 2023 as the crypto industry sought to build real-world asset infrastructure on decentralized networks. BlackRock launched BUIDL in March 2024 as a blockchain-based vehicle for short-duration Treasury obligations.

The $15.1 billion tokenized Treasury market remains a fraction of the roughly $33 trillion US Treasury market overall. But the category has attracted major institutional players including Franklin Templeton, Ondo Finance, and Hashedout over the past 18 months, each competing for custody and distribution in an asset class that avoids traditional banking rails.

Circle's USYC, launched in May 2024, offers exposure to a 6-month T-bill ladder and has become the second-largest offering in the space. The pair now account for roughly 37% of the tokenized Treasury total by assets.

BUIDL's return to the lead comes as crypto asset managers report sustained institutional demand for yield-bearing products that hold minimal market risk. The tokenized Treasury category differs structurally from staking derivatives or synthetic assets, as the underlying collateral is US government debt backed by full faith and credit.

Market leadership in tokenized Treasuries has shifted twice in six months. If BUIDL holds its current margin over USYC through the end of the fourth quarter, it would indicate sustained institutional preference for BlackRock's execution and distribution network over newer entrants.
