Binance Smart Chain has overtaken Solana to become the second-largest blockchain by total value locked, according to on-chain data from DefiLlama. BSC held $4.88 billion in TVL versus Solana's $4.87 billion as of late Sunday, a shift that came after BSC jumped from the fourth position a day earlier.

The move comes with the tightness of competition in the mid-tier blockchain hierarchy. The gap between BSC and Solana is less than $10 million, meaning the ranking could reverse within hours depending on inflows and outflows across decentralized finance protocols deployed on each chain. Ethereum dominates the ranking by more than threefold, while Tron and other Layer 1s occupy positions below the top two.

BSC's rapid ascent in 24 hours is tied to activity on its largest protocols. The chain hosts decentralized exchanges, lending markets, and derivatives platforms that aggregate billions in collateral and liquidity. Solana's TVL had grown steadily since its 2022 crash, but network activity and developer migration across chains remain fluid.

Rankings by TVL can be volatile. A single withdrawal by a large liquidity provider or a shift in yield farming incentives can move chains up or down the rankings within minutes. The two chains compete for developer adoption and user deposits in parallel.

BSC is operated by Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, which has used its infrastructure to support its broader trading and lending ecosystem. Solana's chain is maintained by its foundation and validator network, and the network has prioritized throughput and transaction cost reduction since its restart following the 2022 collapse.

The ranking gap of one-tenth of a percent means the distinction between second and third place carries minimal material weight as an operating measure. If either chain posts a significant protocol withdrawal or experiences renewed inflows, the positions will swap again.
