Apollo Atomics, a Y Combinator alumnus, closed a $31 million seed round to commercialize compact pressurized water reactors built around a redesigned steam generator, according to an announcement released Wednesday.

The round was led by Founders Circle Ventures and a consortium of backers. The company's core innovation is a 40-fold reduction in steam generator footprint, the component that transfers heat from the reactor core to the turbine that generates electricity. By miniaturizing this part, Apollo can shrink the overall reactor and shift manufacturing from on-site construction to factory assembly, a shift the company says cuts capital costs significantly.

Steam generators have long been a cost and logistics bottleneck in nuclear plant construction. Traditional pressurized water reactors require massive steam generators that must be built or transported to the site, adding months to construction timelines and billions to project costs. Apollo's approach addresses what it characterizes as an overlooked efficiency gap: the steam generator typically occupies far more physical space than thermodynamic constraints require. By redesigning the internals to pack more surface area into smaller dimensions, the company can reduce the entire reactor's size without sacrificing power output.

Small modular reactors, or SMRs, have drawn tens of billions in government backing and private capital, though most projects remain in development or early deployment phases. Apollo's focus on a single component rather than a complete redesign from scratch is a narrower target, which the company says allows faster path to commercialization using proven reactor physics.

Apollo was founded by engineers from established nuclear firms and brings technical pedigree to a crowded field of nuclear startups. The company plans to use the capital to scale manufacturing, secure regulatory approvals, and build its first demonstration units. The crypto and AI cohorts have drawn most of Y Combinator's recent venture attention, making a nuclear hardware play in the 2026 batch notable.

The 40-fold reduction in steam generator size translates to a similar order of magnitude shrinkage in factory floor space required per unit during assembly. Apollo's model compresses what was once a site-specific engineering problem into a repeatable, quality-controlled manufacturing process. If execution matches the design claims, factory replication could reset the economics of nuclear builds, though capital deployment at scale remains years away.
