Anthropic has agreed to pay Nscale $45 billion over six years for compute capacity at a facility in West Virginia, according to reporting from Bloomberg and CNBC. The deal covers 460 megawatts and is expected to bring the facility online by the end of 2027.
The commitment matches the scale of Anthropic's previous major infrastructure investments. In May 2026, the company signed a $45 billion compute deal with SpaceX covering a six-year term. Anthropic also committed $10 billion to Volta for chip manufacturing capacity announced in August.
Nscale is a UK-based AI infrastructure company focused on building and operating data centers for machine learning workloads. The West Virginia facility represents a significant expansion of compute availability for large-scale AI model training and deployment. Anthropic has been among the most aggressive purchasers of compute capacity in the industry as it scales production of Claude, its flagship large language model.
The 460-megawatt scale puts the facility in the range of utility-scale power requirements. For context, a single large data center typically consumes between 100 and 500 megawatts depending on its size and workload density. The six-year term aligns Anthropic's infrastructure commitments with the typical lifespan of hardware refresh cycles in cloud computing.
The announcement comes as AI companies compete intensely for scarce compute resources. Earlier in August, Microsoft and OpenAI jointly committed to spending as much as $100 billion on infrastructure over the coming decade. GPU and chip shortages have become a primary constraint on model development timelines across the industry.
