Mastercard is sponsoring the XRP Ledger Hackathon in New York on October 24-25, according to an announcement by XRPL Commons. The two-day event precedes Ripple's Swell conference, scheduled for October 27-29 in the same city.
The hackathon brings a major payments processor into the developer ecosystem around XRP Ledger, the open-source blockchain maintained by Ripple. Mastercard has a history of direct involvement in crypto infrastructure; the company launched its own blockchain-based settlement network in 2023 and has piloted stablecoin-related payments in emerging markets.
Ripple Swell, now in its fifth iteration, draws institutional participants in payments and blockchain. The conference has historically featured announcements of partnerships and technical integrations. By staging the hackathon immediately before Swell, organizers create a pipeline: developers competing in the hackathon can pitch projects to Swell attendees in the days immediately following.
XRP Ledger operates as a public, permissionless network. Unlike Ethereum or Solana, it prioritizes payment settlement finality and low transaction costs, attracting builders focused on cross-border transfers and remittance rails. The hackathon, hosted on Luma, does not yet list a participant cap.

Mastercard is the first major U.S. payments firm to formally back an XRP Ledger developer event. Visa has explored blockchain settlement separately but has not publicly sponsored XRP infrastructure events.
The hackathon occurs as XRP's token price has stabilized around $2.40 after regulatory uncertainty around Ripple's prior SEC enforcement action. Swell 2026 will test whether the clearer legal environment for XRP holders translates into announced partnerships at the corporate level.
If Mastercard announces a direct integration with XRP Ledger or reveals a hackathon winner working on Mastercard-adjacent payment flows, the sponsorship will have served as a recruitment event rather than pure corporate goodwill.
