The release introduces Falcon-1024 post-quantum cryptography at the protocol level, allowing accounts to adopt quantum-resistant signing without breaking compatibility with existing addresses. It also replaces Algorand's flat fee model with dynamic pricing that charges based on the size and complexity of what a transaction contains, rather than a fixed per-transaction cost. The Algorand Virtual Machine advances to version 13, increasing the maximum app size and flexibility for larger smart contracts.
Algorand's consensus mechanism requires node operators to vote on major upgrades before they take effect. The company did not specify a timeline for the vote or activation window.
