World Liberty Financial has appointed Ryan Ballantyne as chief business officer, according to an announcement by Zach Witkoff, the protocol's founder. Ballantyne brings more than three decades of experience in capital markets, derivatives, and digital assets, the firm said.

Ballantyne most recently led Corporate Client Strategy at Coinbase Institutional, where he spent more than four years. The protocol launched in 2024 with backing tied to political figures including Donald Trump and his family members, positioning itself as a competitor in the DeFi lending and yield space.

World Liberty Financial operates as a decentralized protocol for lending and borrowing, built on blockchain infrastructure. The protocol has competed for assets in a crowded DeFi market where Aave, Compound, and other lending protocols have amassed tens of billions in total value locked. Ballantyne's institutional background at Coinbase positions him to develop partnerships with traditional finance firms and crypto-native institutions seeking DeFi exposure.

Ballantyne's hire follows World Liberty Financial's push to expand its business development and client acquisition teams. His three decades spanning derivatives markets and institutional capital flows cover experience in structuring products for professional investors, a constituency DeFi platforms have increasingly pursued.

Coinbase Institutional, where Ballantyne worked, serves hedge funds, asset managers, and other institutional clients by offering custody, trading, and yield-generation services. His tenure there covered periods of both crypto market expansion and regulatory tightening, giving him exposure to compliance and risk frameworks that institutional clients demand.

Ballantyne's hire represents World Liberty Financial's third major personnel addition this year, after it expanded its legal and compliance divisions in response to rising regulatory scrutiny of DeFi protocols.

Ballantyne's appointment follows a period in which DeFi lending protocols have competed aggressively for institutional deposits through yield programs and white-glove client services. If World Liberty Financial executes on Ballantyne's institutional strategy, the protocol's total value locked would stand as the key metric to watch against competitors already managing billions in client assets.
