Zcash is targeting November 5 for mainnet activation of its NU7 upgrade, which would reduce block time to 25 seconds from the current 75 seconds, according to developer Sean Bowe. Testnet activation is scheduled for October 6, with a final mainnet decision pending a performance assessment on October 20.

The block-time reduction represents a threefold acceleration. Zcash's current 75-second block interval has remained unchanged since the network's launch in 2016. The upgrade condenses that window to match faster competing layer-one chains while maintaining the network's privacy-focused transaction model.

NU7 is Zcash's latest scheduled upgrade cycle. Prior major upgrades, NU5 in 2022 and NU6 in 2024, have introduced new transaction types and protocol features on roughly annual or biennial intervals. The naming convention follows Zcash's numbered upgrade sequence; NU stands for network upgrade.

Reducing block time increases transaction throughput per unit time. At 75 seconds per block, Zcash processes one block every 75 seconds. At 25 seconds, it would process three blocks in the same span, assuming no change to transaction capacity per block. Faster blocks also lower confirmation latency for users and allow more frequent participation by network validators.

Zcash's privacy architecture, which shields sender, receiver, and transaction amount by default using zero-knowledge proofs, operates independently of block time. Faster blocks do not reduce the cryptographic privacy guarantees that distinguish Zcash from most other layer-one chains.

The October 20 performance checkpoint allows developers to assess testnet results. Testnet activation precedes mainnet by several weeks to allow node operators, miners, and wallet developers to test behavior under load. If the testnet period reveals instability or unexpected resource consumption, developers can postpone the November 5 mainnet target.

Zcash's upgrade cadence differs from Ethereum's, which averages one major hardfork per 12 to 18 months, and from Bitcoin's, which deploys soft forks as consensus permits without a fixed schedule. Zcash's numbered upgrade sequence allows the protocol to iterate faster while maintaining community review at defined checkpoints.
