X-Energy said it has secured up to $1 billion in additional U.S. funding for an advanced nuclear reactor project at a Dow chemical facility in Seadrift, Texas, according to a statement made during the company's second-quarter earnings call on August 13.

The funding comes through the Department of Energy's Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program, a cost-share partnership that supports commercial deployment of next-generation reactor designs. The $1 billion in new commitments supplements earlier ARDP awards and represents a significant expansion of federal backing for X-Energy's Xe-100 high-temperature gas-cooled reactor technology, which the company is developing to supply industrial heat and power to petrochemical operations.

X-Energy's Xe-100 is a 200-megawatt thermal reactor design cooled by helium gas rather than water, operating at temperatures above 750 degrees Celsius. The technology targets industrial applications where high-heat processes dominate operations, particularly in refining and chemical manufacturing. Dow's Seadrift complex, which produces styrene and other chemical feedstocks, represents a use case where sustained thermal output at industrial scale can displace natural gas burning and reduce carbon intensity in production.

The ARDP, established under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in 2021, has distributed billions in federal support across six reactor projects selected for demonstration. The program pairs government funding with private capital and site operator commitments in a tripartite structure designed to accelerate the transition from prototype to operational deployment. X-Energy's additional award comes as the DOE continues to support diverse reactor architectures beyond conventional light-water designs, which dominate the current U.S. fleet.

The funding announcement comes as nuclear technology companies face mounting pressure to deliver functional reactors on schedule and within budget. X-Energy did not disclose a revised timeline or total project cost in the earnings disclosure, though the company has previously outlined a target operational date for the Seadrift unit.

The Xe-100 project now has received commitments from both the DOE and from Dow as an anchor customer. X-Energy's capital risk declines with Dow's commitment as an industrial buyer backing the reactor's ability to meet process heat requirements. Competition in the advanced reactor space has intensified, with Commonwealth Fusion Systems, TerraPower and NuScale also pursuing ARDP funding and commercial deployment timelines.

X-Energy's Q2 results showed the company posted a net loss, a common position for private nuclear developers in the pre-revenue phase. The additional federal funding provides working capital for engineering, supply chain development and licensing activities required to move from construction-ready design to operational status.
