WalletConnect and Base are partnering to implement native account abstraction across all EVM-compatible blockchains, according to a post on X. The initiative centers on EIP-8130, an Ethereum Improvement Proposal standard for account abstraction.

The partnership expands beyond the two named parties. Optimism and Coinbase are also involved in rolling out the EIP-8130 standard across EVM chains, according to reporting in July 2026. Account abstraction removes the distinction between externally owned accounts and smart contract accounts on blockchains, allowing wallets to abstract away private key management and enable features like transaction batching and social recovery.

EIP-8130 defines a standardized approach to account abstraction that works across multiple chains. By bringing the standard to wallets at the infrastructure level rather than on individual chains, the partners aim to create a uniform user experience. WalletConnect operates as a wallet connection protocol used by thousands of decentralized applications and wallets to enable signing and transaction submission.

Base, Coinbase's Ethereum Layer 2 network, has become a significant hub for onchain activity since its mainnet launch in 2024. The network processed over $1 billion in transaction volume within its first months of operation. Optimism, the earlier-launched Ethereum Layer 2, has maintained top-tier status among OP Stack chains by total value locked and daily transactions.

Account abstraction has been a long-standing development priority for Ethereum infrastructure teams. Previous iterations required chain-specific implementations or smart contract wallets that added friction to user onboarding. A cross-chain standard aims to reduce that fragmentation.
