Monthly trading volume on decentralized exchanges for tokenized stocks reached nearly $18 billion in September, according to data from Token Terminal, a ninefold increase from $20 million twelve months earlier.

Tokenized stocks are blockchain-based representations of equities, traded on decentralized protocols without intermediaries. The volume spike tracks growing institutional adoption of on-chain equity trading infrastructure and the maturation of platforms that offer fractional ownership and continuous settlement.

Token Terminal's tracking of monthly spot trading activity shows the category has accelerated sharply in 2024. The $18 billion September figure represents a single month of trading across multiple tokenized stock DEX platforms, the bulk of which are concentrated in a handful of established protocols. Year-to-date volume figures are not yet public, but the September result alone outpaces the entirety of monthly volumes recorded through much of 2023.

Tokenized equities on blockchain have attracted attention from both retail and institutional traders seeking alternatives to traditional stock exchanges. The mechanism allows traders to hold and trade stocks via self-custody wallets, settle transactions without clearinghouses, and access markets outside traditional hours. Regulatory frameworks for tokenized securities remain fragmented globally, with some jurisdictions treating them as securities subject to full registration and others creating sandbox environments for issuers and exchanges.

The volume expansion in September follows broader institutional inflows into crypto infrastructure this year. Spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs in the United States, approved in January and July respectively, have accelerated capital flows into on-chain settlement and trading rails, some of which have cross-collateralization with tokenized stock protocols.

A 900x increase over twelve months places tokenized stock DEX volume among the fastest-growing segments in decentralized finance, though absolute dollar volumes remain microscopic next to spot trading in major cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin spot trading on decentralized exchanges reached roughly $150 billion monthly in mid-2024, according to on-chain analytics platforms. Tokenized stocks would need sustained growth at current rates to approach comparable scale.

If monthly volumes in October and November sustain above $10 billion, the trend shows structural adoption rather than a single month of algorithmic trading or promotional activity. Should volumes contract sharply, the September reading may mark a temporary arbitrage event now unwinding.
