Tim Cook's final day as Apple chief executive officer concludes a 15-year tenure that saw the company's market capitalization grow by $4.3 trillion, from roughly $350 billion in August 2011 to approximately $4.67 trillion as of this month.

John Ternus, who held the role of senior vice president of hardware engineering, assumed the chief executive post today. Apple announced the succession plan in April, naming Cook to the newly created position of executive chairman. The transition marks the first leadership change at Apple since Cook took the helm following Steve Jobs' death in 2011.

Cook inherited a company valued at roughly $350 billion and presided over the iPhone's evolution into the dominant consumer electronics category globally. Under his stewardship, Apple released the iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods, Apple TV+ and other product lines that expanded revenue beyond smartphones. The company's stock price rose from roughly $15 per share in 2011 to over $232 per share as of late August 2026, a multiple of 15.5x.

Apple's market capitalization at the time of Cook's arrival ranked third globally, trailing Exxon Mobil and PetroChina. By the end of 2023, it had become the first public company to exceed $3 trillion in market value. The company maintained that position through Cook's final weeks, though competitive pressure from artificial intelligence capabilities offered by rivals like Microsoft and Google intensified throughout 2024 and 2025.

Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and led development of the iPad, iPhone and Mac hardware platforms. His promotion brings product-engineering focus into the chief executive role; Cook's operational emphasis on supply chain optimization and financial engineering will now fall to others in his executive chairman capacity. Ternus faces immediate pressure to integrate artificial intelligence features across Apple's product ecosystem as competitors race to embed generative AI into consumer devices.

Cook's $4.3 trillion market cap gain exceeds the total market value of all but roughly a dozen public companies globally today. His tenure spanned the smartphone revolution, the rise of wearable computing, and the emergence of services as a meaningful revenue driver; services revenue grew from roughly $4 billion annually in 2011 to over $85 billion by 2025.

Ternus will inherit a company with over 161,000 employees and operations in over 150 countries. The handoff occurs as Apple faces intensifying regulatory scrutiny in the European Union, the United States and China over App Store practices, market concentration, and labor practices in manufacturing supply chains.
