Tether's USDT stablecoin is now available on Stellar, the payments-focused blockchain, according to an announcement posted by Stellar on September 1.
Stellar operates as a settlement layer for stablecoins and cross-border payments. The network has positioned itself around faster, cheaper transactions for financial institutions and remittance corridors. Tether's USDT is the largest stablecoin by market capitalization, with a circulating supply of roughly 120 billion tokens across multiple blockchains including Ethereum, Tron, Bitcoin, Solana and Arbitrum.

The addition of USDT to Stellar expands Tether's distribution footprint. Tether has systematically added support for new blockchains over the past two years, including Polkadot, Stacks and Aptos. Each new chain increases the token's addressable user base and reduces dependency on any single network's liquidity pools.

Stellar's infrastructure is built around atomic settlement and low-cost payments. The network uses a consensus mechanism distinct from proof-of-work, enabling faster finality than many competing blockchains. For stablecoin issuers, the trade-off is adoption: Stellar has never achieved mainstream developer or user traction comparable to Ethereum or Solana, measured by total value locked or daily transaction volume.
Tether's presence could reshape that equation. The company has used USDT listings as a strategic tool to drive adoption of smaller networks. When Tether added support for Tron in 2019, USDT volume on that chain grew to rival Ethereum within 18 months. The dynamic depends entirely on whether users or institutions actually move capital to the new chain, rather than merely accessing Tether's token on an existing one.
Stellar's stablecoin pitch directly competes with networks like Polygon, Avalanche and Optimism, which all support USDT and have larger installed bases. Stellar's claim rests on settlement speed and cost structure rather than developer ecosystem breadth. Tether's decision to enter the network validates Stellar's technical readiness but does not guarantee it will accumulate meaningful volume or liquidity.
Stellar Foundation has not disclosed transaction volume targets for USDT or announced any formal partnership terms with Tether. The integration appears to be a technical addition rather than a strategic joint initiative. Watch whether Tether issues a formal announcement from its own channels within the next 30 days, which would indicate deeper institutional commitment to Stellar as a distribution channel.
