Tata Consultancy Services' HyperVault unit and its partners have committed 700 billion rupees ($7.4 billion) to build a one-gigawatt artificial intelligence data center campus in Hyderabad, according to an announcement made Saturday. The facility is expected to rank among the largest of its kind in India.

The investment comes as Indian technology firms move to secure data center capacity as cloud computing and AI workloads expand. TCS, one of India's largest IT services firms by revenue, is moving beyond software services into infrastructure as global companies shift more computing operations to Indian facilities.

HyperVault, TCS's dedicated data center unit, will lead the project as part of a broader strategy to serve enterprise clients running AI applications. The one-gigawatt specification refers to the electrical power capacity the campus will be able to draw, a measure of scale in data center infrastructure. Comparable mega-facilities globally, including those built by hyperscalers in the United States and Europe, typically range from 100 megawatts to multiple gigawatts depending on their design and intended workload.

TCS is not alone in this push. Other Indian technology and infrastructure companies have announced data center expansions as multinational firms look to diversify their computing footprint outside China and traditional Western hubs. The southern Indian market, particularly around Hyderabad and Bangalore, has become a focal point for these investments due to existing tech talent density, power infrastructure, and government incentives.

The 700 billion rupee figure converts to approximately $7.4 billion at current exchange rates, making this one of the largest single infrastructure commitments any Indian tech firm has announced for data center capacity. The project's timeline and phased rollout remain unspecified in the company's statement.

India's data center market has grown roughly 30 percent annually over the past three years as domestic and international cloud operators expand. TCS is betting that this growth will continue and that Indian firms can capture value across the entire stack from hardware to service delivery.

The document to watch is TCS's next quarterly earnings call, where management is expected to detail the campus's phased deployment schedule and customer commitments already in place.
