SpaceX plans to launch Starlink Mobile by the end of 2027, positioning the service as a competitor to AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon, according to remarks made during the company's Q2 2026 earnings call.
The service will use terrestrial small base stations paired with Starlink satellite dishes rather than traditional large cell towers. SpaceX will deploy the infrastructure across the US using 65 MHz of spectrum obtained from EchoStar. The company has not disclosed the number of base stations or specific coverage areas for the 2027 launch.


SpaceX's push into mobile connectivity extends its bet on vertical integration across satellite internet and ground infrastructure. The company already operates Starlink as a satellite broadband service with millions of active subscribers globally. Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX's president and chief operating officer, said during the earnings call that Starlink Mobile would compete directly with the three largest carriers by revenue and subscriber count.
The terrestrial base station approach differs from the satellite-only model some competitors have pursued. By anchoring mobile service to ground infrastructure collocated with Starlink dishes, SpaceX will reduce latency and improve reliability compared to service delivered entirely from orbit. EchoStar, which holds the 65 MHz spectrum band, granted SpaceX access to deploy the network.
Carrier consolidation and spectrum scarcity have kept the US wireless market concentrated among AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile since 2013. A new entrant offering nationwide service would require hundreds of thousands of base stations and years of buildout. SpaceX's timeline of 2027 means the company expects to begin limited commercial service within 18 months, though full national coverage typically takes carriers five to seven years to achieve.
SpaceX has not specified pricing, service tiers or coverage density targets for Starlink Mobile. The company said it would announce further details closer to launch. The number of base stations SpaceX will need to deploy relative to established carriers is the key metric that will determine service quality and competitive positioning.
