SpaceX and Nvidia have partnered to develop a space-optimized Vera Rubin NVL72 system, with a launch to orbit planned for Q4 2027 and scale-up operations set to begin in 2028.

The Vera Rubin NVL72 is Nvidia's GPU compute module designed for edge deployment in environments with strict power and thermal constraints. The system will be deployed in orbit, where it can process machine learning workloads without relying on ground-based data centers. The partnership expands Nvidia's presence in placing inferencing and training capacity beyond traditional terrestrial infrastructure.

SpaceX operates the Starlink constellation. The company has not disclosed the specific use cases or customer base for the space-deployed system. Nvidia's official announcement on August 24 confirmed the timeline but did not specify hardware quantity, orbital altitude, or operational scope.

The Vera Rubin modules are compact by design, approximately 3 by 2 inches and consuming less than 70 watts of power under load. Nvidia has positioned the hardware for autonomous systems, robotics, and on-device AI inference where latency and network connectivity are constraints. SpaceX's orbital deployment would test the modules' viability under radiation exposure and microgravity conditions over an extended operational window.
