Polkadot has opened the Products Devnet, a public testing environment that lets developers build and test applications against a replica of the protocol's planned production network. The move follows proof-of-concept trials at the 2026 Web3 Summit in June, where nearly 900 participants executed decentralized payments and identity verifications without friction.
The devnet integrates a full-stack Product SDK, a .dot domain naming system via DotNS, and native mobile and desktop applications. Developers can access the sandbox on Android and iOS to prototype applications before the production network launches.
Polkadot's devnet strategy mirrors standard practices in blockchain infrastructure: public testnets allow developers to discover UX pain points and validate smart contract logic before mainnet deployment, reducing failed launches and security incidents. The 900-participant trial in June gave Polkadot early feedback on application performance at scale across payment and identity use cases, two categories where blockchain adoption has historically stalled on user experience grounds.

The full-stack SDK approach differs from earlier Polkadot developer programs that required deep knowledge of the protocol's runtime architecture. By bundling the SDK, naming layer, and mobile clients together, Polkadot lowers the entry barrier for teams accustomed to traditional app development stacks.
Polkadot's devnet sits within a broader shift across Layer 1 chains toward production-adjacent sandboxes. Cosmos launched Stargate testnet phases; Solana operates devnet and testnet clusters; Ethereum runs Sepolia with mainnet-equivalent settings. These environments have become standard gates before mainnet feature launches. Polkadot has not disclosed a timeline for Products mainnet deployment.
The devnet's adoption among developers will determine whether the SDK abstraction layer successfully onboards non-Substrate engineers. Comparable metrics, testnet wallet counts and deployed smart contract totals, are typically the first indicators of developer interest. If the devnet reaches participation levels comparable to the Web3 Summit trial within the first 90 days, Polkadot will have demonstrated that its developer onboarding design worked at scale.
