Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Digital Asset, Progmat and Secured Finance are running a proof of concept to move Japanese government bond repurchase agreements onto the Canton blockchain network for real-time settlement, the parties announced today.
The PoC targets one of the world's largest collateral markets. JGB repos routinely settle on a T+0 or T+1 basis through traditional clearing infrastructure; moving the lifecycle onchain could reduce settlement lag and allow securities to move between counterparties without the delays baked into current market infrastructure. Canton, operated by Digital Asset, is a blockchain platform built on DAML and designed for institutional financial workflows.
MUFG is Japan's largest bank by assets. Several Japanese regional banks have experimented with tokenized assets since 2023, and the Bank of Japan has explored central bank digital currencies and wholesale settlement rails.
Secured Finance, a decentralized lending protocol, will provide the lending infrastructure for the PoC. Progmat, a Japanese fintech, is handling technical integration. The announcement did not specify the timeline for the test, the volume of JGBs the parties plan to move, or whether the PoC would move to production.

Digital Asset has built Canton specifically for financial institutions that need deterministic settlement and privacy controls. The network has attracted a consortium of Japanese banks and securities firms as participants. A successful JGB PoC could serve as a model for other government bond markets, particularly in jurisdictions where central banks are actively exploring blockchain infrastructure for wholesale payments.
The PoC targets a market where speed advantages compound: JGBs are among the most liquid fixed income instruments globally, and real-time settlement would shorten the time window between trade execution and cash-collateral exchange. If the test succeeds, MUFG would face regulatory approval to move real volumes onchain, a process that could take months to years depending on how Japanese financial regulators assess the custody, valuation and systemic risk implications of onchain repos.
The number to watch is whether the parties announce a production timeline within the next 12 months. MUFG would need to clear technical and regulatory hurdles before routing actual JGB trades through a blockchain network.
