Kenya's national examinations council KNEC has moved its academic credential verification system to the Avalanche blockchain, allowing employers, universities and government agencies to instantly confirm whether a certificate is genuine.

The deployment marks one of the largest public-sector uses of Avalanche to date, according to the blockchain network. KNEC built the system on top of an e-certificate platform the council rolled out earlier in 2026, extending digital credentials onto an immutable ledger.

Kenya has reported thousands of forged academic certificates circulating in the labor and education markets annually. The onchain system creates a permanent, tamper-resistant record that third parties can query without relying on KNEC's own infrastructure to remain online or accessible during verification requests. Once a certificate is anchored to the blockchain, its authenticity becomes independently verifiable.

The timing aligns with broader African adoption of blockchain infrastructure for public services. Several African nations have experimented with onchain land registries, health records and business licensing systems over the past three years, though most remain pilots. Kenya's move to anchor academic credentials at national scale represents one of the first complete migrations of a government examination body's records onto a public blockchain.

Avalanche processes transactions faster and at lower cost than larger networks like Ethereum, a trade-off that has attracted government and enterprise deployments in emerging markets. The network's throughput and fee structure make it feasible to store high volumes of credential data without the operational costs that would accumulate on competing chains.

KNEC did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the number of records now stored on Avalanche or the timeline for full migration of its credential database.

The system's effectiveness depends on sustained adoption by the institutions that verify certificates. If employers and universities do not routinely query the blockchain to confirm credentials, the onchain records remain available but underutilized, limiting the impact on forgery rates. KNEC's announcement indicates the platform is operational for instant verification, but the extent to which verification bodies have integrated the system into hiring and admissions workflows remains unclear.
