HYPE token reached $90.92 on September 18, surpassing its prior peak of $86.71 set August 27, after Hyperliquid launched a manual borrowing feature allowing users to borrow stablecoins against HYPE and Bitcoin collateral.

The borrowing mechanism lets users post HYPE or BTC as collateral to obtain USDC or USDT, expanding the utility of the exchange's native token beyond trading and staking. The feature addresses a common friction point in decentralized finance: users holding collateral assets now have an on-platform channel to access liquidity without selling positions. Similar lending products across protocols like Aave and Compound have driven adoption through the same path.

Hyperliquid has grown into one of the largest decentralized perpetual futures exchanges by open interest, handling billions in notional volume monthly. The addition of manual borrowing is part of a broader shift toward making perpetual exchanges function as full-stack financial platforms, where users can trade, long, borrow and lend without leaving the interface. Dydx and other competitors offer similar features.

The price move from $86.71 to $90.92 represents a 4.9 percent gain over the three-week span. Token appreciation on the day of feature launches is common in crypto markets when announcements expand utility, though such moves frequently correct within days or weeks absent sustained demand for the new functionality.

Hyperliquid does not report public data on collateral usage or borrow volume, making it difficult to assess how heavily users are tapping the borrowing facility. Sustained adoption would require competitive rates relative to centralized exchanges and other protocols, and Hyperliquid will face pricing pressure from established lending markets with deeper liquidity pools. The critical measure will be whether borrowing activity grows month-over-month or remains a fringe use case within the exchange.
