HSBC rolled out RedCoin, its first Hong Kong Dollar stablecoin, to retail users on October 23, 2026, via its PayMe mobile payments platform. The stablecoin is accessible to over 3.3 million PayMe users and accepted across 100,000 merchants in Hong Kong, according to the bank's announcement.

The launch marks HSBC's entry into stablecoin issuance at a retail scale, following Anchorpoint's August 2026 institutional launch of HKDAP. RedCoin operates as a 1:1 HKD-pegged token, allowing users to hold and transact Hong Kong Dollars on blockchain rails. HSBC said wallet activation is rolling out over the coming days as the platform scales.

HSBC has positioned stablecoins as part of a broader digitalization of Hong Kong's financial infrastructure. Traditional finance firms across Asia have begun issuing local-currency stablecoins to reach retail customers and integrate blockchain settlement into existing payment networks. PayMe, HSBC's digital wallet with 3.3 million active users, provides an existing distribution channel that sidesteps the need for separate user acquisition.

The 100,000-merchant acceptance threshold places RedCoin among the broadest retail stablecoin networks launched globally to date. For comparison, most institutional HKD stablecoins operate within closed settlement networks; retail-facing stablecoin ecosystems typically require months to build merchant coverage. HSBC secured merchant participation prior to launch through coordination with payment processors and retailers in Hong Kong.

Regulatory approval in Hong Kong has accelerated stablecoin adoption since the Monetary Authority's 2024 guidance on tokenized fiat issuance. HSBC's retail launch follows the city's positioning as a blockchain hub for Asia-Pacific finance, where central bank digital currency pilots and stablecoin frameworks compete for primacy. The bank did not disclose RedCoin's initial circulation or reserve structure; stablecoin issuers in Hong Kong remain subject to MA oversight on customer fund protection and redemption guarantees.

RedCoin's merchant network size relative to its launch date will determine whether HSBC can sustain retail adoption beyond early users. If RedCoin reaches parity with PayMe's total merchant base within six months, HSBC will have demonstrated that institutional stablecoin issuers can achieve retail scale through embedded payment platforms rather than consumer app distribution.
