Foreign investors purchased $5.0B of South Korean equities on Friday in a single-day record, according to Korea Exchange data, marking a sharp reversal after they sold $96.7B of Korean stocks across the first half of 2026.
The July 31 inflow was the largest daily foreign purchase on record for the market. The timing coincided with a broader rotation away from South Korean equities by domestic retail investors, who sold stocks aggressively on the same day.
Foreign capital had exited South Korea's stock market consistently through the first seven months of 2026. The cumulative outflow of nearly $97B through late July had made the country one of the year's most targeted emerging-market exits by international funds. That selling pressure corresponded with rate expectations and currency moves that made dollar-denominated returns less attractive for overseas allocators.
Domestic retail participation had filled much of the void during the foreign exodus. South Korean retail investors purchased $67B of equities across the first half of 2026, including a concentrated $57B in May and June alone, according to data tracked by market observers. That retail buying appeared to reverse sharply on Friday as the foreign inflow arrived.

The magnitude of Friday's single-day foreign purchase, $5.0B, was unprecedented in the available record. Daily foreign buying in South Korean equities typically measures in the hundreds of millions of dollars, making the $5.0B transaction an outlier by a factor of 10 or more.
The one-day inflow followed months of foreign fund redemptions that had been driven by higher U.S. Treasury yields and the relative outperformance of domestic U.S. equities. South Korea's benchmark KOSPI index had underperformed major peers over the period as foreign selling persisted.
Whether the $5.0B purchase on Friday represents a sustained reentry or a tactical trade will become clear within days. The volume and timing distinguish it from the steady daily flows that dominated the market through mid-2026, but a single massive inflow does not by itself establish a trend.
