Fidelity Digital Assets said Bitcoin's current private-key protections may eventually require replacement or supplementation as quantum computing advances, according to a report published September 1.

Cryptographically relevant quantum computers do not exist today. A sufficiently powerful machine could theoretically use Shor's algorithm to derive private keys from public keys, potentially exposing funds secured under Bitcoin's current elliptic curve signature scheme.

Fidelity's analysis frames the risk as a long-term structural problem rather than an immediate threat. The firm says researchers are already evaluating quantum-resistant alternatives, including the SHRINCS signature system proposed by Blockstream. Any upgrade to Bitcoin's consensus rules would force a choice between competing technical costs: transaction size would grow, on-chain fees could rise, and network capacity might compress.

The warning arrives as quantum research accelerates across government and private labs. IBM, Google, and others have published roadmaps for fault-tolerant systems, though timelines remain speculative. Bitcoin's decentralized governance structure means any cryptographic migration would require broad agreement among miners, node operators, and the developer community, a coordination challenge Fidelity did not address in its report.

A migration away from Bitcoin's current signature scheme has been discussed in technical forums since the early 2010s. Taproot, activated in 2021, created infrastructure for alternative signature verification but did not introduce quantum resistance. Ethereum and other blockchains face identical exposure to Shor's algorithm and have not deployed quantum-resistant upgrades either.

Fidelity's endorsement of SHRINCS evaluation lends institutional weight to a conversation that has remained largely academic. The firm manages digital assets for clients and speaks from the position of a major infrastructure provider with skin in Bitcoin's long-term security.

Fidelity named the tradeoff explicitly: security gains against quantum threats would compress throughput and inflate costs, constraints Bitcoin's network already manages under current demand. The document to watch is whether Bitcoin's developer community initiates formal research into a consensus-rule upgrade pathway before quantum threat timelines narrow further.
