Ethereum is aiming for full post-quantum cryptography readiness by December 2029, with quantum-safe signatures and account abstraction upgrades planned for the Hegotá release, according to the Ethereum Foundation's protocol announcement dated September 7.
The shift to post-quantum signatures marks a structural change to how Ethereum validates transactions. Current ECDSA cryptography relies on elliptic curve mathematics vulnerable to sufficiently powerful quantum computers. The Foundation's roadmap calls for replacing these with quantum-resistant algorithms before such machines mature to cryptanalytic scale, a timeline researchers estimate at 15 to 20 years away. Hegotá bundles this upgrade with account abstraction improvements and censorship resistance features into a single protocol release.
Two EIPs anchor the quantum work. EIP-7805 addresses account abstraction and is classified as S-tier priority within Hegotá's scope. EIP-8141 covers post-quantum signature schemes. The Foundation has ranked quantum resistance among its highest protocol security priorities, alongside ongoing work on Ethereum's existing consensus and execution layers.
The 2029 target assumes no major delays in cryptographic research or testing phases. Ethereum's upgrade cadence has historically compressed or extended based on implementation complexity and ecosystem readiness. Dencun, the most recent major upgrade, took two years from specification to mainnet activation. Hegotá's scope, combining quantum readiness with account abstraction, is substantially broader than a single-focus release.
Quantum resistance has moved from academic concern to practical roadmap item across major blockchains. Bitcoin researchers have explored similar migration paths. Ethereum has placed an explicit timeline and named release channel into its formal planning.
The Foundation's quantum-resistance roadmap is public on Ethereum.org, detailing the cryptographic migration strategy and risk assessment. Developers and researchers can track progress through Hegotá's formal specification and EIP discussions.
Ethereum is committing 34 months to a cryptographic foundation shift that most layer-1 protocols have not yet named on their roadmaps. If the Foundation meets the December 2029 target, Ethereum would be among the first major blockchains to operationalize post-quantum signatures at scale. The metric that decides execution is whether Hegotá ships with both EIP-7805 and EIP-8141 working in concert by the stated deadline.
