Coinbase will launch perpetual futures contracts on Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate oil on August 3, 2026, opening at 9:00am UTC, according to an announcement on X by Coinbase Markets.
The exchange will open BRENTOIL-PERP and WTIOIL-PERP markets, expanding its existing derivatives offering. Coinbase began trading oil futures in 2024 and has since added gold and natural gas perpetuals to its product suite. The move follows a broader push by crypto derivatives platforms to offer commodity-linked contracts alongside traditional crypto assets.
Perpetual futures allow traders to hold long or short positions on an underlying asset without expiration dates, unlike standard futures contracts that settle on a fixed date. Oil benchmarks like Brent and WTI are priced continuously in spot markets and serve as the reference for pricing derivatives. The contracts are cash-settled, meaning traders do not take physical delivery of crude oil.
Commodity derivatives have become a competitive arena for centralized crypto exchanges. CME Group, the world's largest futures exchange operator, trades Brent and WTI futures with daily volumes exceeding $1 trillion notional. Crypto platforms typically target retail and professional traders seeking fractional exposure or multiple positions unavailable in traditional markets.

Coinbase Derivatives, the exchange's futures division, operates under a regulated framework. The platform operates a derivatives exchange registered with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission as a designated contract market. Adding oil perpetuals allows Coinbase to compete with platforms like Bybit and Kraken, which already offer commodity contracts to international users.
The timing comes as institutional interest in crypto derivatives infrastructure remains steady. Coinbase's quarterly earnings reports in 2025 and early 2026 showed derivatives revenue growing as a percentage of total trading volume, though spot trading still dominates user activity.
Coinbase's expansion into commodities places the company in direct competition with traditional and decentralized derivative platforms on breadth of underlying assets. Coinbase has added at least three commodity product lines in the past two years. The August 3 launch commits the company to this competitive posture.
