CME Group has launched the CME CF Emerging Crypto Index, a benchmark tracking the ten largest cryptocurrencies outside Bitcoin and Ethereum. The index includes Binance Coin, Ripple, Solana, Hyperliquid's HYPE token, Chainlink, Stellar, Sui, Uniswap, Avalanche and Aave.

The move expands CME's benchmarking footprint beyond the two dominant digital assets. The exchange operator has positioned crypto indices as infrastructure for institutional trading and derivatives pricing, drawing on its decades-long role in traditional commodity and financial markets. CME also launched a companion Crypto Market Index that combines the same ten assets with Bitcoin and Ethereum, giving traders a full-market reference point alongside the emerging-assets-only version.

Both indices calculate in real time, refreshing every second with daily settlement prints in London, New York and Singapore. CME weights each index by free-float market capitalization and refreshes constituent membership every June and December. The benchmarks are reference tools rather than tradable products themselves, though they can anchor futures contracts and other derivatives.

CME's emerging-assets focus tracks institutional demand to monitor crypto markets beyond the two largest names by market value. Bitcoin and Ethereum have dominated institutional custody and derivatives activity since 2017, leaving traders with limited standardized benchmarks for monitoring altcoin performance as a cohesive market segment. CME's benchmark offerings compete with those from other index providers that track similar subsets of the crypto market.

CME has expanded its crypto infrastructure steadily since launching Bitcoin futures in December 2017, followed by Ether futures in February 2021. The firm has since added micro contracts, options and other derivatives across both assets. Institutional investors, hedge funds and asset managers use CME contracts to hedge exposure, gain directional positioning or trade without holding the underlying tokens.

The Emerging Crypto Index weights heavily toward projects with established tokenomics and trading volume. Solana, Uniswap and Avalanche have each built ecosystems that capture transaction fees and governance activity. Chainlink and Stellar serve settlement and oracle functions across other blockchains. Aave is a lending protocol with governance rights tied to its token. The inclusion of Hyperliquid's HYPE token, which trades on the Hyperliquid derivatives platform itself, marks a shift toward recognizing newer trading venues as legitimate sources of price discovery.

CME's two-index structure, one excluding and one including Bitcoin and Ethereum, gives institutional clients flexibility to hedge different portfolio exposures or track market movement across segments. The free-float weighting methodology aligns with standard practice in traditional equity indices, where locked-up shares and founder holdings are excluded from the divisor. A semi-annual refresh schedule balances stability with responsiveness to market shifts.

The indices launched August 31, 2026. CME has not announced tradable products linked to either benchmark, though institutional interest in altcoin derivatives has grown as stablecoin volumes and spot trading have expanded outside traditional exchanges. The number of crypto assets with sufficient liquidity and market depth to support institutional trading has roughly doubled since 2023, expanding the addressable market for index-based products.

Bitcoin and Ethereum futures remain CME's primary crypto revenue driver, but a growing pool of assets with genuine transaction utility and governance structures has created an opening for broader market tracking. Settlement operations in three time zones and real-time calculation indicate CME is prepared for significant adoption.
