BNB Chain activated its Pasteur hard fork on BSC mainnet, introducing security upgrades to its bridge, staking, and governance systems while increasing throughput by 88 percent in testnet benchmarks.

Testnet benchmarks showed the upgrade raised transactions per second to 2,324 from a prior 1,237, while maintaining block times of 450 milliseconds. BNB Chain noted the figures came from controlled test workloads and did not reflect mainnet performance. The upgrade targets vulnerabilities in cross-chain bridging and governance mechanisms without altering the underlying block production cadence.

BNB Chain is Binance's standalone blockchain, launched in 2020 as a faster, lower-cost alternative to Ethereum. The network processes roughly 5 million daily transactions across DeFi protocols, staking platforms, and NFT marketplaces. The Pasteur upgrade follows a prior mainnet restart in May 2024 that introduced validator changes and reduced minimum staking requirements to 2 BNB from 10 BNB.

Nomad Bridge lost 190 million dollars in August 2022; Poly Network was drained of 611 million dollars in August 2021. BNB Chain's prior bridge infrastructure allowed users to lock assets on one chain and mint wrapped versions on BSC. The Pasteur changes address specific risk surfaces in that mechanism, though BNB Chain did not publicly detail the exact vulnerabilities addressed.

Throughput gains carry limited direct bearing on user experience if network capacity was already sufficient. BSC averaged 2.8 million transactions daily over the past 30 days according on-chain data, well below the 2,324 TPS ceiling. An 88 percent jump in a controlled testnet workload does not guarantee equivalent gains under real-world transaction patterns, which cluster around certain block times and create temporary congestion spikes.

The hard fork is mandatory, requiring all validators to upgrade client software or fall out of consensus. BNB Chain did not report any failed upgrades or consensus breaks during the activation. Governance and staking parameter changes were subject to on-chain voting by BNB holders in the week prior.

BNB Chain's testnet throughput now exceeds that of Ethereum Layer 2 solutions like Optimism (4,500 TPS theoretical) and Arbitrum (40,000 TPS theoretical under ideal conditions). Whether the 88 percent improvement translates to production impact depends on actual network traffic and whether existing congestion was a bottleneck for users or application developers.
