Binance Smart Chain deployed the Pasteur hardfork on August 25, activating three protocol enhancements designed to strengthen cross-chain verification, tighten validator governance, and increase transaction capacity within its 450-millisecond block interval.

The upgrade ships three Binance Enhancement Proposals: BEP-682 hardens cross-chain signature verification by preventing duplicate validators from participating in the same verification process; BEP-695 tightens validator key rotation schedules, slashing conditions, and governance vote thresholds; and BEP-675 expands the transaction throughput individual blocks can carry without extending the 450ms block time that BSC has maintained since its inception.

BSC processes roughly 2.1 million daily transactions across decentralized finance and Web3 applications, according to on-chain metrics. The chain has operated at a 450ms block finality since launch, a speed tradeoff that prioritizes throughput over the longer confirmation windows common on competing layer-one blockchains. BEP-675 does not alter that interval but allows more transactions per block within the same time window, a mechanism that increases capacity without requiring validators to accept higher hardware requirements.

BEP-695 addresses validator set management. The proposal introduces stricter key rotation requirements to reduce the window in which a compromised validator key could access stake or governance votes, and implements tighter slashing conditions that lower the threshold for network consensus to penalize misbehaving validators. These changes flow into governance, where the proposal raises the vote threshold for validator set modifications.

BEP-682 targets a specific vulnerability in BSC's bridge infrastructure. Cross-chain message verification relies on validator consensus across both BSC and its linked chains. The proposal prevents the same validator from attesting to the same cross-chain message twice, a safeguard that closes a path to double-spending or replay attacks on interoperability routes.

The Binance Chain development team stated the upgrade completed testnet validation before mainnet activation. No production metrics on block size increases or validator behavior under the new rules have been disclosed; the network will report performance data as blocks accumulate under the new parameters.

BSC carries roughly 140 billion dollars in total value locked across smart contracts, according to major analytics platforms. Cross-chain bridges account for approximately 8 to 12 percent of that value, making bridge security a material surface area for the broader ecosystem. BEP-682 and BEP-695 together reduce that surface by narrowing the conditions under which a validator malfunction or compromise could propagate to dependent applications.

The hardfork required no user action and no changes to wallet or exchange infrastructure; nodes that did not upgrade before August 25 would have fallen out of consensus with the active chain. Validator operators coordinated the upgrade in advance through BNB Chain's validator governance channels.
