BlackRock deployed $1.17 billion into Bitcoin and Ethereum over a 48-hour period, according to on-chain tracking data from Spot On Chain released August 21.

The purchases broke down as 11,098 BTC worth $852 million and 132,769 ETH worth $316 million. The timing and scale of the deployment track BlackRock's sustained accumulation across the two largest cryptocurrencies, a pattern that has followed its expansion of spot trading products since the regulatory approval of bitcoin and ethereum ETFs in the United States.

BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Mini Trust (IBIT) and iShares Ethereum Trust (IETH) have become primary vehicles for institutional allocation into digital assets. Combined inflows into these products have accelerated since their January 2024 approval, marking a shift in how institutional capital accesses cryptocurrency markets without requiring direct custody or exchange accounts.

The $1.17 billion deployment in 48 hours represents a concentrated buying window. On-chain tracking platforms like Spot On Chain monitor large transfers and acquisitions by tracking wallet movements tied to known institutional addresses, though the precise timing of when BlackRock's acquisition orders were filled versus when they settled on-chain can differ by hours.

BlackRock has not publicly commented on individual trading decisions. The company manages $10.7 trillion in assets globally and has positioned digital asset exposure as a long-term holding allocation rather than a trading strategy, according to public statements from executives.

The $1.17 billion move comes as Bitcoin traded in the $39,000 to $42,000 range and Ethereum fluctuated between $2,350 and $2,450 during the same 48-hour window. Institutional buyers often deploy capital in tranches across multiple days to manage market impact and execution risk.
