Alibaba is targeting $100 billion in combined cloud and AI external revenue by 2030 with an EBITDA margin goal of 20 percent, according to a Form 6-K filing and earnings call held on August 20.
The target encompasses revenue from cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence services, and model-as-a-service offerings sold to external customers. Alibaba's cloud division generated 56.7 billion yuan in revenue in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, with a 6 percent operating margin. Reaching a 20 percent EBITDA margin across a $100 billion revenue base would require the division to more than double its profitability rate while expanding the addressable market.
Alibaba has been investing heavily in large language models and AI infrastructure. The company launched its Qwen model family in 2023 and has since released multiple iterations, including Qwen 2.5, which it open-sourced in October 2024. These models power Alibaba's cloud offerings and are available through its platform for third-party developers and enterprises.
The cloud division operates in a market dominated by Alibaba, Tencent Cloud, and Huawei Cloud in China, with Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud holding the largest global share. Alibaba Cloud's 2026 operating margin of 6 percent trails industry leaders by a significant margin. AWS reported operating margins above 30 percent in recent quarters, though that includes AWS's higher-margin services beyond infrastructure.
Alibaba's investment in AI capabilities follows a broader industry shift toward incorporating generative AI into cloud offerings. The company competes with Tencent and other regional rivals while selling to overseas customers through regional data centers. Reaching $100 billion in external cloud and AI revenue would require compound annual growth of approximately 20 to 25 percent from current levels, depending on how fiscal 2026 revenues close.
The 20 percent EBITDA margin target requires cost of revenue to decline substantially as the division scales. Infrastructure investments are amortized across a larger customer base as capacity rates improve. Whether Alibaba can achieve this margin while maintaining competitive pricing in a crowded market depends on sustained customer adoption and its ability to differentiate through AI services.
